The distance between Ataturk airport and Istanbul is not that long — around 20 kilometers (to Sultanahmet) and 29 kilometers to Taksim. You can easily go from the airport to Istanbul city centre by several transport options: by bus, tube, taxi or transfer.

If you decide to see all the landmarks in Sultanahmet, you will likely opt for the tube — it will bring you to the destination in an hour and for only 12 liras. If your option is Taksim — a fave spot of many tourists — you should choose a bus trip. It’s pretty cheap (11 liras) and will only take 40 minutes. Sure, if you need a comfortable and smooth trip without any other travelers around, just choose transfer / taxi on the spot.

Please note that the price for a taxi on the spot is different from the transfer price. The transfer price is fixed (from $26), while the taxi price can vary and usually depend on many factors (time of day, number of bags, etc.)

We should admit that transport in Istanbul is very comfortable and of high quality. They are building new tube lines and develop new routes to various regions and nearby towns. Still, please note that it’s not about direct routes, and if you have too many bags with you, it might state a problem to change and search for best routes by public transport. Moreover, the final cost will consist of different transportation options. Don’t forget that you need to exchange currency to local liras to be able to pay for the tickets with no problem.
