There’s nothing quite like travelling. With all its amazing experiences and with its truly unique way of showing us the grandeur of life, travelling can change you inside and out. It can change your views on life, it can help you make amazing friends and it can show you how really miraculous this entire world is.

Why would you travel long term, though? What are the advantages of doing it? How about the disadvantages? We have gathered some of the most common pros and cons to long term travelling – so read on and find out more.

The Pros

Long-term travel can be less expensive than short-term travel. Because you will be able to rent a place for a longer period of time, you will not have to pay the overprice of a hotel or guest house. Instead, you will be able to pay rent just how a local would.

Aside from the financial aspects, long-term travel can also be a much more immersive experience. After all, you will basically move to another place for a given amount of time – which means that you will get to experience it in-depth. You will get to know its best places to eat out, you will immerse in that place’s culture and you will be able to make quite a lot of long-term friends as well.

Last, but definitely not least, travelling long-term is great when you want to learn a foreign language. Even by simply being surrounded by its native speakers, that language has a much better chance of soaking into your mind.

The Cons

Like everything else in life, long term travelling can come with its less advantageous aspects too. And one of the most serious ones is that you will have to disrupt your work. If you can work remotely, using the Internet, that’s fine. But if your job cannot keep you away for too long, you might have to be very serious when considering whether or not you should put your work on “pause mode” for the sake of travelling.

Also, long term travelling can get lonely and it can make you miss home like nothing else. There is nothing like the place you grew up in – where your friends and your entire family are, in the end. And while the places you visit can offer you a “home”, there will be times when you will just miss the one you left behind.

And here’s another important thing to keep in mind: the logistics and the packing for a long-term haul will draw every inch of energy from you. Not knowing exactly what to pack, having to deal with things such as sending packages to arrive before you, handling visas, currency exchanges, flight changes – all these things are quite time and energy-consuming, so it is important that you keep your cool and deal with them as gracefully as possible. Plan ahead, be well-organized and things will be much easier to cope with!
