European Road Trip: A guide to the best driving holidays on the continent

The first country that usually comes to mind as the road trip capital of the world is America. Recently however, more people than ever are choosing Europe as their destination of choice for driving holidays. There’s no better place to spend your holiday on the open road – after all, Europe is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world.

If you can’t decide where to go, we’ve teamed up with Grange, Used Aston Martin dealership to give you the run-down of some of the best driving holiday destinations:

Route Napoleon – France

This iconic French road lets you follow in the footsteps of one of the country’s most famous historical figures. Napoléon Bonaparte first took this route in 1815, when he marched from Elba to Grenoble to overthrow Louis the 18th.

Running all the way from Cannes to Grenoble in Southern France, Route Napoleon takes you through the Alps and the Alps Maritimes – both have a huge amount to offer in the way of amazing views.

For any thrill seekers out there, this road is a must; with fast straights, hairpin turns and cambered corners, this route will put your driving skills to the test.

Route 500 – Germany

Route 500 in Germany may be one of the major roads through the country, but it’s so much more than a means of getting from A to B. This impressive stretch of road, located between the Swiss border and Baden Baden will take you right through Germany’s Black Forest region. Home to vast pine forests and stunning mountain scenery, this is a road trip guaranteed to take your breath away.

It’s recommended that drivers set off early in the day however, as this route can be prone to traffic build up at times.

Stelvio Pass – Italy

Italy’s Stelvio Pass is located high up in the Eastern Italian Alps and was once voted the best driving road in the world by the BBC’s Top Gear. A must for any driving enthusiast, the Stelvio Pass is surrounded by awe-inspiring mountain scenery.

Even the most experienced driver will have their skills put to the test here; the roads 48 switchback turns can prove challenging, so it’s recommended that you take some time to pull over occasionally and focus – this will also give you a chance to take in the sights.

Grossglockner High Alpine Road – Austria

Austria’s Grossglockner High Alpine Road, also known as the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, winds down from the highest mountain in the country – and you won’t be disappointed by the views! Situated 2,504 meters above sea level and packed with challenging hairpin turns, this route is already a big hit with sports car fans and motorbike enthusiasts all over the world.

Taking the 30-mile long road from one end of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road to the other will cost you €25 for a motorcycle and €35 for a private car. Here, you’ll pass the Alpine Nature Show Museum, Hohe Tauern National parkand Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe — home to the Pasterze Glacier.

Route One – Iceland

Iceland’s Route One is an 800-mile long stretch of road circumnavigating the entire island, allowing you to see everything that makes this country so special.

Surrounded by stunning scenery including hot springs, waterfalls, geysers and even ash deserts, this route really does offer a bit of everything. You’ll also encounter some tougher terrain here, including lava fields and volcanos, so it’s recommended that you take this route in a sturdy vehicle, such as a Land Rover or other 4×4 so that you can handle the rough gravel sections of the road with ease.
