A Newlywed’s Guide to Packing for the Honeymoon

You’ve been knee-deep in wedding planning longer than you can remember and the Big Day is almost here. Your attendants have all had their bridesmaid dresses altered, your guest counts have been submitted and your favors have all been tied with perfect Martha Stewart bows. Nothing left to do but wait, right?

Have you packed yet for the honeymoon?

One of the best parts of getting married is the romantic vacation afterword. Couples get so focused on planning the wedding though, that some forget to invest a little time in preparing for the coming relaxation.

Depending on your honeymoon destination, what you pack may or may not be really important. If you’re planning an idyllic week on the beach at an all-inclusive resort, it might be enough that you have your bikini, sunscreen and sunglasses on hand. If you are destined for an adventure deep in a remote rainforest, there is a lot more to consider if you plan to survive.

Yet, there are some common items that almost all couples need to remember to bring. These include:

  • Valid Photo Identification including your passport if you are traveling internationally. Also bring an extra photocopy of your passport in case the original becomes lost.
  • A copy of your marriage license. Your marriage certificate is unlikely to be ready when you leave for your honeymoon unless you married at City Hall or delayed taking your honeymoon. Make sure reservations are in your maiden name if this is the case as you won’t yet have any documentation in your married name.
  • Prescription medications (in your carry on!) and a copy of the medical script for each one in case you lose and need to replace them. This includes your prescription-strength glasses!
  • Limited Cash. Bring cash in case of an emergency and small bills for tipping airport and hotel personnel.
  • Credit Card(s) that are accepted widely in the country to which you are traveling. If you are traveling to more remote regions, research your particular honeymoon spot in advance so you have the right payment methods in hand. Note that many credit cards offer preferred exchange rates, so call your credit card company in advance to determine if you have reason to use one card over another. Whether your travel internationally or domestically, you should also ask about any travel insurance benefits you might enjoy as a member, and let them know you will be traveling so they don’t flag your card mistakenly as stolen when you first try to use it.
  • A Cellular Phone can be handy in so many ways these days if you are able to negotiate a decent rate for service abroad (you’ll have service in most major cities in the US). Use your cell for emergency contact, but also to find your way using GPS, look up restaurants and attractions to visit, manage your hotel and excursion reservations and to fight boredom on long flights. You can also use your phone with various apps to make payment at many businesses.
  • Your chargers and gadgets! Life without electronic device is just too scary!
  • A Paper Copy of all of your reservation details, even if you know you have them electronically.
  • Sunscreen is essential to skin health no matter where you are in the world. Take yours and wear it!

Of course, you’ll also need clothing, lingerie and toiletries appropriate for your destination. What is the most important item you plan to pack for your honeymoon?
